Lafayette Urban Ministry

The Lafayette Urban Ministry is an organization of 42 Christian churches that serves as a social safety net for Lafayette’s needy children and families. For almost 40 years, LUM has worked to give back the hope, the future, and the self-respect to low-income people in the Greater Lafayette community. It plays an active role in trying to change social injustices and improve their quality of life.

Its efforts include its "5th Quarter" Summer Learning Retention Program, a homeless shelter, a food pantry, Jubilee Christmas (photo at right), camps and tax preparation services.

There are many different opportunities for volunteering, from working one-on-one with a child in the afternoon to helping run the 42-bed homeless shelter overnight. Also, there are opportunities to fit every schedule, from regular long-term commitments such as being an advocate once a week in the morning Emergency Assistance Program, to helping out one time with a special event such as the Thanksgiving Celebration. Some volunteer positions require training while others require only a willing heart and a helping hand.
